The Cost of Schooling

10th Feb 2009

The Department for Children, Schools and Family has recently published a report detailing its findings on the cost to parentsand carers of schooling today's children. The research carried out in 2007 by BMRB Social Research is an update to similar work done in 2003.

School Style Limited is a member of the Schoolwear Association and we subscribe to their view that while we welcome the research and consider much of the findings helpful we also feel that other parts are misleading.

Some key points from the report were that the average annual cost to parents and carers of schooling a primary school child was £683.79 and £1,195.47 for a child at secondary school.

Of this the report claims the cost of school uniform was £163.72 for a child at primary school and £211.60 for a child at secondary school and these figures were broadly static from 2003. The report also concludes that parents and carers now buy more items but these are at lower cost per garment that in 2003.

These figures will sound high to some but it should be considered that these figures do include shoes and will include blazers for a proportion of schools.

You can download the whole report by clicking here.

We will confidently predict that buying your child's uniform from will cost you significantly less than the average figures detailed in the report.
