Increase in Cotton Prices

Record Cost of Raw Cotton Threatens Price Rises Across the Globe - Nov 2010

There has been significant coverage in recent weeks about the shortage of supply and subsequent record cost of raw cotton. High street retailers have been openly warning consumers to expect price rises in finished goods of up to 10%.

Unfortunately the schoolwear industry is not imune and while most large manufacturers buy early to secure supply and price consistency they have now started to put up their prices. Rowlinson Knitwear, who are the most established and largest independent manufacturers have increased their prices by 10% from November 2010. It is expected that others will follow and these rises in cost prices come on top of other rises earlier in the year. Together it means that the cost of plain garments alone will have risen by up to 15% during 2010.

The Schoolwear Association who represents both manufacturers and retailers of schoolwear have produced a fact sheet to help members, school and parents understand the siuation and implications of the current situation.
